Psychiatry for Behavioral Health & MAT

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral health services. As a doctor, a psychiatrist can help with medical treatments for issues such as alcohol and opioid addiction. Psychiatrists are trained to diagnose mental illness and to prescribe the necessary medications. When someone is recovering from addiction, a substance use psychiatrist may choose to utilize Medicated-Assisted Treatment (MAT), prescribing and monitoring the appropriate medications to aid in substance abuse recovery.

While therapists provide counseling or talk therapy for addiction recovery, psychiatrists deal with the medical side of recovery. The two disciplines support each other, often providing better results together than either would alone.

Psychiatric Comorbidities

Alcohol and Opioid addiction psychiatry has a wide range of benefits, as people who suffer from addiction may experience other psychiatric disorders as well. Those who abuse alcohol or opioids often develop issues including depression, anxiety, or PTSD. They also are at risk of developing other substance abuse disorders, such as a dependence on stimulants or cannabis. These comorbidities sometimes resolve themselves when the patient stops using the substance and overcomes withdrawal, but, in some cases, they can persist. In fact, for some, these psychiatric comorbidities may have been a problem before the substance abuse started. Regardless of their source, psychiatric services paired with Medication Assisted Therapy merge to address behavioral health from a comprehensive standpoint, acknowledging that patients who experience other psychiatric diagnoses may find it even more difficult to recover from addiction. The most effective treatment for addiction recovery will address these other issues as well as the addiction, itself.

Buprenorphine

The most effective treatment for opioid addiction is Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT.)  Counseling is important to help support the recovery process by helping the individual restore relationships and improve coping skills.  However, medication provides the best chance for individuals to reduce their risk of relapse.  Buprenorphine is one of the medicines that works well for people with opioid addiction.  Buprenorphine is a type of opioid that attaches to receptors in the brain and provides weak stimulation that is harder for people to feel a “high.”  It also strongly holds onto the receptors and blocks the effects of more dangerous opioids like heroin.  People find the buprenorphine relieves the opioid cravings that sabotage efforts to be in recovery yet feel more in control of the medicine because of the inability to get “high.”  Buprenorphine is available as a daily oral medicine that absorbs in the mouth or as a monthly long-acting shot called Sublocade.

Naltrexone

Naltrexone is another medicine that works well for people who are addicted to opioids.  It also works for people with addiction to alcohol.  Naltrexone completely blocks opioid receptors in the brain so that any dangerous opioids such as heroin do not have any effect.   Naltrexone also provides control of cravings.  Natlrexone is available as a daily oral medicine or as a monthly long-acting shot called Vivitrol.
